Rejoicing in God’s Gift of Love

At the heart of the Christmas season stands one unshakable truth: the love of God is the key to understanding the gospel. The birth of Christ is more than a quaint nativity scene—it is the living testimony that God did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all. In this gift we see a love that protects, delivers, justifies, and secures us forever.

Charles Spurgeon once said, “Divine love can rake a dunghill, and find a diamond.” This is the miracle of the incarnation: God stepped into our brokenness, not because we were lovely, but because He is love.

God’s Love Protects, Delivers, and Justifies

Paul declares in Romans 8 that if God is for us, who can be against us? The Christian can rest in peace because the Lord is our protector. Through the only begotten Son, we have been delivered from sin and death into eternal life.

It began in Bethlehem. The life of the Christ-child was the beginning of God’s justifying work—a perfect life lived in quiet humility until the time came for His public ministry, calling sinners to repentance. The Righteous One came to dwell among the unrighteous so that through His life, His undeserved death, and His resurrection, those who call on His name might have life to the full.

God’s Love Magnifies the Glory of the Trinity

J.I. Packer once wrote, “The Trinity is the basis of the gospel, and the gospel is a declaration of the Trinity in action.” Indeed, in the Christmas story we see Father, Son, and Spirit at work.

  • Jesus Christ is the one who covers our sin by His death.

  • He is the one who intercedes for us before the Father, presenting His bride as holy and refined.

  • The Father and the Son send the Spirit to open blind eyes, awaken dead hearts, and grant new life.

The love of God in Christ magnifies the glory of the Godhead, reminding us that salvation is not our doing but His.

God’s Love Is Totally and Unalterably Powerful

The world craves powerful saviors—leaders of charisma, wealth, or social standing. But these “saviors” falter, and so do we, weighed down by pride, ambition, and selfishness. True love is not found in human might but in the God-Man, Jesus Christ.

As John 3:16–21 reminds us, God’s love sent Christ not to condemn the world but to save it. His love penetrates both the turmoil outside us and the chaos within us. And when we come to Him as children, we find that His love is enough to conquer sin, temptation, and despair.

God’s Love Is Perfectly Evidenced in His Son

Isaiah 25 foretold the day when God would swallow up death forever and wipe away every tear. This hope is fulfilled in Christ. Yet it remains staggering to think that the infant in the manger was born to die—that His death would be our life.

Christmas teaches us that God’s ways are not our ways. We never would have chosen the cradle, the cross, or the empty tomb. But God, in His wisdom and boundless love, chose this path so that we might rejoice in His salvation.

So Why Christmas?

  • Because joy is the true mark of love and hope.

  • Because peace is found in a single person—Jesus Christ.

  • Because God keeps His Word.

  • Because the gospel still matters today.

How Should We Respond?

  • Repent and confess your sins. Trust Christ as your perfect Priest, Prophet, and King.

  • Return from your waywardness and receive the embrace of the Father.

  • Be joined to the bride of Christ—the local church—and live as one who rejoices in God’s gift of love.

Christmas is not simply about sentimentality or tradition. It is about the unbreakable love of God, revealed in Jesus Christ, who came for us, died for us, rose for us, and now reigns for us. And because of Him, nothing—neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor any created thing—can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
